I just uploaded some paintings from the past couple of years, but they are all new to you guys because I've never uploaded them to DA before

I'm also going to be posting images of paintings that I like and good quotes that I've read from books or that I've heard that relate to painting, so hopefully I can make it a good tumblr to follow if you are interested in painting and my work....

yayayayay!

and I realize it's been well over a year since I've last posted any art work here...so I apologize for that, but I actually still check DA almost everyday and look at what people have been making...but I don't post any comments, so again...I'm sorry, I'm like a ghost...

so yeah check out my tumblr if you want, if you have one too I'd love to check it out and follow it! let me know <3

I love your work! It's like what I wish I could paint, but even if I was able to handle and manipulate the paint exactly as I wanted, I could never paint like you. You have such a unique voice and I'm totally jealous. I've only just started painting and I don't have my voice yet.

You art seems restrained and abstemious even though you paint self portraits. I think this is because I see things happening within your paintings. In short, they're more than something pretty to look at.

Are you in art school? If so, has it helped? A long time ago I decided I wanted to attempt to change the world "one person at a time" and so took the route of English and Education instead of art (cliche and idealistic? You betchya). I've since grown jealous of all my artist friends who are making a name for themselves and actually doing things with their art. I can't decide if that is what I want or the route I've been on is what I want anymore. I decided to get better at art in order to give-it-a-go, but I still haven't done that yet haha. I still suck pretty bad.

I guess I'm asking this because I admire your work, for one thing, and also you seem to reflect on your experiences and discuss the process of your paintings. So I ask your opinion: Do I need to name myself an artist, and nothing more, in order to gain my own unique voice? Is being an artist and being an educator or a writer or whatever impossible?

T.S. Eliot said, "The progress of an artist is a continual self-sacrifice, a continual extinction of personality". If this is true, it's almost as if I couldn't do anything, but be an artist. It's as if I have to chose the life of an artist or nothing more.
Do you agree?

If you have no fucking clue as to what I'm talking about then that's totally cool too hahaha. I've just been going through this whole reflective phase since I'm about to graduate... *sigh* What do I want to be when I grow up....?

yes I go to art school, the Kansas City Art Institute -it's a great school and is NOT apart of the AI chain. The painting department there does not focus on having you believe in one theory or make you only focus on your craft but rather looks at painting as a philosophy and not a medium. There is a lot of freedom here and thus you have to be very self-disciplined to get ahead. Art school is great because it sets you up with the resources you need but it's up to you to take advantage of them. If your also trying to enter the fine art world as a career it's also important because it gives you some creditability and experience.

If your focus is defining your own "voice" or "style" your going about that the wrong way. your voice is evident in your work the second you choose a color and make a stroke because it is made by you and your hand is different from everyone else because you have your own set of experiences that determine how you make judgments. You can manipulate your habits and impulses and that's good because that trains you to know what YOU really want and what is necessary for your painting. The most important thing about painting is knowing why a choice your making is your own and why YOU like it and why it's significant to YOU. Your voice will come naturally with this.

You have to do what you can to survive. If I am having trouble being an artist I'd get a joe-job so I can support myself but you can't let yourself get comfortable and stuck doing something less than what you are. Always strive for more and what you want. as long as you are sincere in your motives then you should be able to get where you want to go.

I can tell that you go to a good school based off of your interpretations and ideologies regarding your artwork and art in general - it is very well reflected in your paintings.

You make a lot of sense. I think I had this all figured out in the back of my mind somewhere, and you managed to make it more tangible. I'll just continue to do what I want to do and my "voice" should transcribe in more than my artwork. If I just continue to push myself in all aspects of art and life I should eventually find myself in a good place, where I actually want to be.

Out of curiosity, do you consider art a hobby or a way of life? Where do you intend on going with your art? Kids used to say to me, "You should be an artist when you grow up." What does that mean? Would one go into graphic design? Would you just paint and paint and sell your work at galleries? In your opinion, what is the purpose of creating art if you get rid of it, only to make more? I have my own answer for this, but if you don't mind, I'd love to hear yours.

there are many, many career paths that you can take as an artist it's not just limited to graphic design or fine art, which a lot of people like to pigeon hole it as. Myself, I'd like to be a fine artist and sell my work and also be a professor. But there are also jobs like being a gallery coordinator or director that I could see myself getting into. The biggest difference between a hobby artist and a fine artist is their mentality. If you want to be a professional artists then your art has to be beyond just being a hobby. you have to invest a certain amount of time in your craft and ideas and know a lot about philosophy and art theory. Without that investment of time then it would be very difficult to validate your work in the fine art world because you have to convince people that your theories on art is a valid conversation and it's one worth having.

With your art your not just making images, you are posing questions to yourself and you are trying to solve them-these questions are backed by a lineage of artists and theories that go back to the beginnings of humanity. These questions obviously cannot be answered all in one painting-that would be impossible. and that's what keeps you going and making more paintings is that questioning process and trying to solve problems.
